A vacation getaway for those wishing to steer away from the swarming crowds! Enjoy every bit of the Cycladic spirit of the Aegean without the summer hustle-and-bustle that comes with it. Your focus will be Tinos, a small island on the north border of the Cyclades archipelago. You will of course get to experience Athens first, by staying a few days in the historic capital and joining a sightseeing tour that will take you to all the sites every first time visitor must see. However, you will soon be ready to move on to Tinos, where you will spend the majority of your holidays.
What makes Tinos famous within Greece, is 'Our Lady of Tinos', an Orthodox church which has been the site of many Christian pilgrimages, due to housing a significant icon of the Holy Mary. Alas, the longer you stay on the island the more apparent it will become that Tinos is so much more than its famous religious site. The island is inextricably tied to marble crafting, with elaborate works decorating various spots on the island, and even a museum dedicated on the craft. Villages like Pyrgos and Kardiani are too picturesque for words and exploring Tinos' assortment of traditional settlements will give you the opportunity to make your way through its green valleys and visit its elaborate dovecotes, which have become an iconic part of the island.
