Your tour begins in Thessaloniki, where your driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel and hit the road towards the Royal Tombs of Vergina. The nearby village with the same name was the place where refuges from Asia Minor settled down in 1923, before the village rose to prominance. This happened in the late '70s with the discovery of the Royal Tombs by Greek professor and archaeologist Andronicos. In antiquity, Vergina was known by the name Aigais and was the first capital of Ancient Macedonia until 400 BC, wbefopre it was transferred to Pella. This was supposed to be the burial place of all Macedonian Kings.

The Ancient Macedonian Tumulus has been completely excavated and a subterranean structure which has the appearance of an earth mound, was built in 1993 for the preservation of the Royal Tombs. The structure encases and protects the ancient monuments by maintaining a constant temperature and humidity level, both integral conditions to the preservation of the wall paintings. The subterranean burial ground houses three Macedonian Tombs, the most famous of which being the Tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Phllip II's tomb is decorated with impressive, rich finds, which were transferred from the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum in order to illuminate the intended magnificence and wealth of the Macedonian Tombs.

Along with your guide, you will make your way inside the subterranean structure and feast your eyes on some of the most historically important objects which once belonged to Philip II – the King’s shield adorned with ivory and gold, the King’s gold-trimmed iron breast plate, gold Diadems of unparalleled craftsmanship, the Golden Wreath of oak leaves, the gold plated collar and the Silver Burial Ums et al. Perhaps the most famous artefact of all, is the Golden Larnax of King Philip II, a chest that was discovered inside the Tomb, containing the remains of the Macedon King. Listen carefully, as your guide takes you back to the era of the Ancient Macedonians, a proud Greek tribe and shows you how their culture and aspirations shaped the world around them.
