This private excursion will journey you to the Eastern side of Crete, where you will explore the traditional aspects of the island, and immerse yourself in the local culture. Starting off, we will find ourselves in the Elounda Bay, a picturesque area that nowadays houses some of the most luxurious resorts on the island. It is time to inject some history to our tour, with a visit to the islet of Spinalonga, a former leper colony, whose Venetian fortifications housed entire families quarantined there for generations. Once we make our way to the small fishing village of Plaka, which has been, since time immemorial, the point of contact bewteen Spinalonga and the main island, we will board a wooden fishing boat and dock on Spinalonga itself. A walking tour will ensue, during which you will visit the restored premises of the colony and learn about Spinalonga's sad history.
Sailing back to Plaka, we will drive to the town of Agios Nikolaos for a stroll around its charming center, which is filled with lively cafes and quaint shops, surrounding the banks of Lake Voulismeni. Our next stop will take us more inland as we will visit the 15th century church of Panagia Kera, just outside the village of Kritsa. After we admire its magnificent Byzantine frescoes, we will drive to the nearby village, stretched in the slopes of Mount Kastellos, surrounded by olive groves and walk around its picturesque alleys. Kritsa's natural beauty is only surpassed by its rich history, as it used to by the largest village on the island during the Middle Ages. In the afternoon, we will return to your hotel.
