Syros, the 'Queen of the Cyclades', was once the premier Greek port. The entrance to the harbour is impressive, as Ermoupoli, the capital of the island with its neo-classical buildings and marble thoroughfares rises amphitheatrically above the port, flanked by a Greek Orthodox church on one hill and a Catholic church on the other. Climb along winding streets and marble steps to the top of the medieval Venetian settlement of Ano Syros for a panoramic view of the island or relax on the beaches of the pretty little fishing village of Kini to marvel at the sunset. You can get to Syros from Athens by plane (35 minutes), normal ferry (about 3.5 hours) or fast boat (about 2.5 hours).
