LESVOS (Beauty and culture)

Lesvos, Greece's third largest island, lies opposite Asia Minor, 5 to 8 miles away. The warm climate of the island, its rich soil and plentiful water have contributed to its distinctive natural scenery: cornfields and olive groves interrupted by tall pine forests. Once inhabited by the musician Terpandros and the poet Arion, the island is most famous as the home of Sappho, the poet known for her lyrical sensuality; and Mytilini, the central port of the island, flourished for centuries as a cultural centre. The north-eastern part of the island is home to a long stretch of secluded beaches, many lying beneath towering cliffs, and because of the island's diversity travelers to the island often find themselves staying much longer than planned. You can get to Lesvos by plane from Athens (50 minutes), normal ferry (about 12 hours, usually overnight trip) or speed boat (about 5,5 hours - available mostly during the high season).
